Secret Layer
Add dimension to every day with a long cut with balayage highlights. Hair is cut with interior layers to add movement. Balayage color boosts the volume on this cut with hand-painted highlights. Diffused at the end, these highlights add extra dimension and draw focus to the haircut shape making passers-by give you first, second and third glances!
Shattered Blonde
Say goodbye to boring cuts with an edgy, updated bob. Visible layers give this platinum blonde cut its edge. Adding movement and volume to fine hair, a secret layer also gives you super powers to create eye-popping updos.
Short Sensation
Be futuristic or take a dash to the past with a convertible cut. Tap into your inner rock star with a puckish pompadour or embrace your inner flapper with some gorgeous Gatsby finger waves. For a causal go-anywhere vibe, toss your fringe to the side and let the highlights do the talking.
Rodney Cutler
The man behind these looks? Rodney Cutler, a Redken Brand Ambassador who works with The Salon at Ulta Beauty to help set trends. And he would know—he’s the mane man who created Emma Watson’s famous pixie snip!

I have straight hair right now. I flat iron it, and it works so well. I dont use chemical relaxers in my hair, because it might burn my scalp. So just leave it in straight, and comb it through.
Alicia:
Sounds like you are on the road to healthy, beautiful hair!
Thanks for checking us out!
I live in Alabama where the humidity is awful. I have shoulder length,high-lighted,natural curly hair. I blow it out straight, straighten wth flat iron & it looi ks ok until I walk outside then it curls frm humidity..I.have tried every product I know..any ideas on product that will fight off humidity or a cut I could try..I’m 42 & very sick of my hair.
You should definitely talk to your salon pro, Tracy. Since you’re both living with the humidity in Alabama, he or she should have some pretty great ideas. And if they don’t, maybe it’s time to try a different salon. And, of course, you can always take a copy of Sophisticate’s Hairstyle Guide with you and show your stylist the looks you’d like to try–they can help you figure out what will actually work for your climate. Good luck, and happy styling!
Every year in August we vacation at the shore for a week. Walking on the boardwalk in steamy August with the wind coming from the beach, my hair poofs up like bad Afro.Until I found John Frieda’s All Weather Works. Try it, it really really works!
I have long medium brown hair and an oval shaped face. I have dark brown eyes and tan fairly easily. I usually go dark chocolate brown with my hair when I have it colored but want to mix it up this time and do something different. I want color that is bold and fun for the summer. Any ideas (highlights/lowlights/color)?
Sophisticate’s Hairstyle Guide has nothing but ideas, Radie! Our current issue, October 2012, has ideas for dip-dye haircolor, as well as what’s going to be hot and hip in 2013 for haircolor. Definitely check it out, Radie!
About a week ago, I lightened my hair to champagne blonde and now I need to get it cut. I have hair just brow my shoulders, but I want to have a short and fun new haircut. I usually like layers, but I would like to try a cut without them. I have an oval shaped face as well, and a petite body! Most girls at my school have trendy hairstyles from last year, but I was hoping maybe I could bring back a style from before my time (I’m 16) so there’s a fresh look. Anything helps!
Hi Charlotte,
The current issue of Sophisticate’s features plenty of short styles we think you’ll love! Katy Perry is on the cover modeling a great bob, a classic style with a modern twist—a sexy side part. Check out the magazine for more ideas and take some of the photos to your stylist for inspiration.
Hi
I’m going in for a haircut in a week and i need suggestions on what i should do with my hair. It is really thick dark brown hair and i have a circular facial shape. I know i want to keep my length but what will make it cute but also a little edgy.
Thanks
Hi, Yvette!
Our October issue (with Selena Gomez on the cover!) is now on sale, showcasing hundreds of fabulous cuts, colors and styles! Long layers will help remove some of the bulk and look fabulous with your face shape, especially if your stylist cuts a few face-framing layers or a sweeping side bang. Happy styling!
I I just dyed my hair a very dark red, I have an oval face. My hair is extremely thick, one hairstylist told me she had never worked with hair as thick as mine. Its straight, pliable, and shoulder length. But the shorter it is the more it poofs out naturally. I like lots of layers. Any suggestions on a new hairstyle?
Hi, Lulu!
Getting layers helps to remove some of the bulkiness of your thick hair. Have you ever tried a blow-out? You don’t even have to go to the salon to get it done! Check out the September issue (the one with Lauren Conrad on the cover!) and flip to the article called “Your Step-By-Step Guide To The Perfect Blow-Dry.” You’ll learn top tips for blow-drying your hair. And once it’s smooth, you can braid, curl it or straighten it. The options are endless! For more style inspiration, page through the rest of the issue—on stands now!
Hi! I have brown shoulder length hair, and an ovalish/roundish face, and I am 14. I was wondering what (maybe edgy)cuts would look good yet age appropriate on me?
Hi, Marisa!
Have you picked up your copy of the April/May issue of Sophisticate’s? Inside, you’ll see a feature on Medium’s Sofia Vassilieva. The teen actress sports a chic, layered, shoulder-length look that’s very stylish and she even offers her best beauty tips!
hi, sophisticates
i have kinda ash brown hair, brown eyes that match and i recently just cut it into a medium bob that just touches my shoulders..im turning 16 on saturday and getting my hair dyed i wanted to do blonde with brown underneath but my hairstylist told me i dont have the skin tone for it and i agree, im fair and have freckles and i need to know what haircolor to dye my hair pleasee:)
P.S. its my first time dyeing it and i want to stand out at school rather than having that plain color
Hi, Rach!
Saturday is coming up quickly. If you trust your stylist’s advice on what not to do, ask for some color options that would complement your skin tone. Check out the March 2011 issue of Sophisticate’s (the one with Lauren Conrad on the cover!) and look for models with the same skin tone as you. Bring the magazine to your stylist and show her your favorite picks!
Hi,
I am 61 years young. My hair is dark blonde, w/grey highlights (natural, of course), fine, but lots of it. My face is square in shape and I have blue/grey eyes. I would like to have a WOW new 2011 hair style.
Thank you.
PS: Please do not publish my email address.
Hi, JJ!
Those with square face shapes benefit from either short or long layers or that soften the angular jaw and forehead. Regardless of length, it’s all about keeping texture in the hair in the form of curls or waves. A sideswept bang and deep side part also look fantastic! Think Angelina Jolie or Salma Hayek.
i like but do u have things for kids?
Hi April:
Happy New Year! We try to cover kids time to time; but our primary content focuses on women…but keep checking as we do run!
Thanks so much for your support…
i have a round kind face and brown eyes and dark brown hair.i am 15. my hair sometimes goes curly/wavy in spots, what kind of haircut should i get. and how can i get good looking waves/curlys daily with little effort? (waves like carrie underwood or miley cyrus)
Hi, Kelsey!
Hair pro Daniel Keane answered your question over in the Hair Pro Advice section. Head over there and check it out!
i have natural curly hair and i dont know what kinda hair style that would be good on me without making it puffy
Hi, Princess!
With naturally curly hair, you can style it all sorts of different ways and wear various lengths. The key to styling is using the right products and tools. Try using curling spray and sculpting gel to scrunch your hair when it’s damp, blow-drying using a diffuser. Also, make sure to cleanse and condition your hair regularly. Leaving styling residue in your hair for more than a day causes dull, lifeless strands.
I’d still be a redhead and any style would look great with my thick hair and kinda of wavy. Also would stay long.
Jennifer:
Sounds like you’re super lucky with amazing hair!
Articles like this really grease the shafts of kolnwegde.
Hi! I just got my first issue today and there is a hairstyle from Hair Machine Australia in the Clip & Snip section. I can’t seem to find the picture anywhere on the web. It should be on page 102 in the bottom left hand corner. I want to email the picture to my friend so that she can see it. Please and thanks (:
Mandee:
We don’t post our issue on the Web…do you still have the issue?
Hey, u should scan it and then email it

i love this magazine! It’s the best! I love the tangerine look but i don’t know if i can pull it off. I have light/medium skin but dark eyebrows and light brown eyes. My natural hair color is light brown with some blond highlights. is there any way i can pull the “tangerine” look off? and how much should i do my hair? or should i just stay away from it?
Hi Haley!
Your best bet is to take in a photo of the model and show it to your professional stylist/colorist. She can check out the color, you can explain what you want and the two of you can discuss what your options are. We’re sure he or she has some great ideas of how you can create a similar look, one that would be customized for your skintone and lifestyle. Good luck!
Haley:
I also love this magazine. I buy it monthly (or at least try to) . . . However, what is the tangerine look? Very curious to know. Please reply.
Wel, it doesn’t really matter what other people think as long as you love it F off all the other people. lol> but i personaly think if u have stright hair you might be able to. But with how everything else is kinda darker i would stay away and go for a more either Black hair or a nice light Brown almost blonde. I think you would look amazing with that with the rest of your fetures. But i’m not a stylest. lol so good luck and i hope you get what u want!
I love the purple! But do you think it’d show / look good with black hair?? Or, should I do a different color? I think I look good wearing pink. I want to look hot for the ladies when I go to girl bars. Haha!
Hi Gene:
Purle and black do go well together in the mane world–we’ve often featured photos of a raven snip layered with purple slices. If you really want the color to stand out, go for a lighter purple; if you want something more subtle, try dark purple, which will pop dramatically in the right light, but blend nicely in quieter environments. Pick up a copy of Sophisticate’s Hairstyle Guide for color examples to show your salon colorist. Happy coloring!
I have very dark hair and I love the parrot style, is there a way you can show peek a boo color styles so yo can where your hair at work and it not be noticed when you don’t want it to be?
Hi Jess:
There are a lot of places you can hide color for those more conservative work places. If you don’t have many layers in your hair, just stay under your partline; the veil of your part will cover the color except for near the ends. If you do have layers, go a little deeper. Have the color placed on the diagonal at or under the temple area. It will be exposed when you pull your hair back.
If you have shorter hair the concept of placement is the same-stay away from the partline, but keep in mind you need to have long enough hair somewhere to lay on top of the color punch. That way it is under wraps for work and not for play!
I hope this helps. Have a blast adding some fun color to your hair!!!
