A soft flow of crimped strands gets the airy treatment thanks to a bit of teasing all the way to the tips. Smooth bangs are bumped forward with a flat iron to fall just above brows. The bright golden hue keeps the coif glowing with shine.

Boasting voluminous curls, long lengths get an infusion of shine from a soft brunette shade. Hot rollers are key in creating loose waves like these, which can be finger combed for the right shape. A light-hold hairspray keeps curls intact and full of movement.

  1. Meagan says:

I have naturally straight hair. It is thick and pretty long. I have side bangs. I am bored of my hair, i have blonde highlights in my dark brown hair so I don’t know if layers would look good because then my higlights might look choppy. Shoe i get my hair cut??

    • Meagan says:

      should***not shoe

    • Sophisticate's Hairstyle Guide says:

      Hi, Meagan!
The length of you hair does not determine whether or not your highlights look choppy. It’s all in the highlight application process. If your stylist applied thin highlights that blend well with your natural color, any cut would look fabulous! However, going from a really long length to a short cut could be a dramatic change. Make sure you want to commit to a shorter cut before chopping all your hair.

  2. Melanie says:

I have short to medium natural curly hair. I’m looking for a new hairstyle to take to the salon. Can someone please suggest some styles for me?

    • Sophisticate's Hairstyle Guide says:

      Hi, Melanie!
We answered your question in the Short Hair section. Check it out!

  6. ken-z says:

my hair is long an really thick an it is really wavy. i have no idea how to style my hair. my bangs are in layers but have grown out to almost even with the rest of my hair. my bangs layered looke okay but it takes a while to straighten an i have little time… a little help please?

    • Sophisticate's Hairstyle Guide says:

      Hi, Ken-z!
If you want to cut down on the time it takes to straighten your hair, begin the process when your hair is damp by blow-drying using a diffuser attachment and a round brush. Doing this will eliminate some of the curl and make it easier for you to style your hair with a flat iron once it’s dry.

  7. Katie says:

I am in search of march 2010 issue with carrie underwood on it. I am looking for the page that has the lighting white girl. Please any help would be great!

    • Sophisticate's Hairstyle Guide says:

      Hi, Katie!
Thanks for reading Sophisticate’s Hairstyle Guide! While we don’t have any back issues we can send you, we suggest checking your local library or perhaps your salon. Some stylists keep a few issues of the magazine so their clients can get inspired. Doesn’t hurt to ask!

  8. maiya david says:

i love my hair long! i’m native american,so its pretty natural.its black and naturally curly.i love my curls! usually natives just have straight hair, but i have CURLY hair,i love it! but then again,i could have some help trying to find stuff to keep my friz down and different hairstyles.

    • Sophisticate's Hairstyle Guide and Frank & Belinda Gambuzza says:

      Hi, Maiya!
Try adding some layers to give your hair more shape and enhance your curls. As for the frizz, that takes the right products. We recommend Shu Uemura Kaze Wave & BioEssence Volumizer hairspray. Apply the Kaze Wave while the hair is damp and shape it the way you want it. Lift and spray volumizer all over the hair and either air-dry or use a diffuser attachment on your blow-dryer. Volumizer is a multipurpose spray that is meant to be used on damp or dry hair and helps hold the curl together as it dries. It will feel a little sticky when hair is damp, but will be soft and natural as it dries.

  9. Jennifer says:

Long past my shoulders to half way down my back.Used to be til I was 16 down to my butt.Don’t like my hair short,on other people short hair looks great but I’m low maintence kind of person so no hairstyles that require heat products or more than five to ten minutes on it.I don’t own a hair dryer, curlers, flat iron or any of that stuff,in fact don’t know how to use any of them. Its healthy so thats why I don’t use any of it plus my luck I would burn my hair or myself.

    • Sophisticate's Hairstyle Guide says:

      Hi, Jennifer!
If you’re interested in learning how to use heat styling tools, your hairstylist will have some great information. All you have to do is ask!

  10. Lindsey Derrick says:

i love to have my hair at a length where it can be pulled up and still look good. And i love my color of my hair to go with the long length, plus it is probably the at the most healthy point right now.

    • Sophisticate's Hairstyle Guide says:

      Hi, Lindsey!
We love all lengths! Check out some of our long-length hairstyles in the June issue. Perhaps you’ll be inspired!

  11. anqie says:

I’m tryinq to qrow out my hair but its staying the same lenqth and thin any suqqestion?!

    • Sophisticate's Hairstyle Guide and Belinda & Frank Gambuzza says:

      Hi, Angie!
There can be several different factors that would play into this: split ends, vitamin deficiencies, hormone variances, etc. We suggest you have your ends trimmed once every 8 to 10 weeks to prevent excessive split ends, and invest in products that nourish and protect the hair fiber. Other than that, we recommend patience and consulting a physician. Sometimes, due to your genetic make-up, gaining length simply takes time.

  12. Ashley says:

I’m having trouble finding a good haircut for myself. I know I want past the shoulder length hair. My face is round and my hair is very flat with medium thickness. Any suggestions? Thanks. :)

    • Bonnie L. Krueger, Editor-in-Chief says:

      Ashley:

We’re checking our experts and will be back soon..stay tuned!

    • Sophisticate's Hairstyle Guide says:

      Hi Ashley:
We suggest you pick up a copy of Sophisticate’s Hairstyle Guide and thumb through the hundreds and hundreds of styles we feature each and every issue. Mark which styles you love the most, then take the issue to your hairstylist. Show him or her what you’ve marked and the two of you can discuss which looks would work the best with your face shape and hair. Your stylist may even be able to pin or arrange your tresses so you can get a sneak peek.

  13. Pamela Moore says:

I have very short hair and I want to grow it out long do you have any ideas on how I can grow it out fast and healthy? Please, help me, I really want long hair…

    • Bonnie L. Krueger, Editor-in-Chief says:

      Pamela:

We’ll check with our experts and will be back in a bit!

    • Sophisticate's Hairstyle Guide and Billy Lowe says:

      Hi Pamela:
Rule #1 when you are growing your hair out: Be sure to visit your hairstylist on a regular basis. Many people think they don’t need to visit as often when they grow their hair out, then their hair ends become damaged and frayed, and look bad during the grow-out phases.

As you are growing your hair out, you are moving through many different styles and shapes. Hair will move in many different ways, so have a discussion with your beauty professional about how you want your hair to look, and be sure you are using PROFESSIONAL products that he or she recommends during this time especially.

Be patient, don’t give up. The inbetween stages can be very frustrating but if you have a goal in mind, flip through Sophisticates Hairstyle Guide and cut out a few pictures and put them on your bathroom mirror for inspiration and encouragement–and so you don’t give up. You’ll get there.

At home, be sure when you shampoo that you give your scalp a nice massage once in a while because massage is good for circulation, which feeds the hair shaft and gives it nourishment. This is very important for maintaining healthy hair. It will also keep your hair looking and feeling healthier during the grow-out phases. Let us know how you do.

  14. Heather says:

I have very long VERY thick hair. I mean I am a hairstylists worst nightmare. It takes about 45 minutes minimum to dry and its frizzy. What can I do to thin it out a little? It’s all one length I want to try something different but I have a cowlick right above my right eye so bangs are out. What can I do? Long thick hair is not always a blessing.

    • Heather says:

Oh and it doesn’t hold curl long it’s so heavy. And perms just look like rats nests and a mess to brush after shampooing. HELP!

    • Bonnie L. Krueger, Editor-in-Chief says:

      Heather:

Thanks for your note…will have an answer in a few days.

    • Trish says:

      Heather

My hair used to be like that right down to the cow lick over my eye! Then a stylist asked me if I wanted her to razor my hair. I didnt have anything to loose so I let her and Ive never looked back. This just thins out my hair so much. I have changed stylists since then but always have it razored. Also I use a straightner with titanium plates to control the wave and frizziness in my hair. Once you straighten it you can go back and add volume with a spray but just getting it to relax is the most important thing.

    • Sophisticate's Hairstyle Guide and Billy Lowe says:

      Hello Heather:
I might suggest a Brazilian Blow-out. Unlike traditional chemical relaxers, a Brazilian blow-out will not chemically change the structure or make-up of your hair, it will simply create a nice smooth look by applying a coating over the hair shaft which helps relax and tame the unruly results. It will also save you a LOT of time both in the salon and at home when you are trying to style your hair. Do your homework, ask for referrals or who might be the best stylist in town for this service. Remember, this is not a permanent procedure so you’ll need to have touch-ups done every 3-4 months or so.

  15. Gaila says:

I am looking for hair styles to try on my 4yr. old daughter. She has very long wavy hair and loves to have her hair in differnt styles. I would appreciate an issue with styles for little girls. Thanks!

    • Bonnie L. Krueger, Editor-in-Chief says:

      Hi Gaila:

Will keep your comments in mind…look for a feature in an upcoming issue. Thank you so much!

  16. Jessie says:

Cool confidence is so beautiful! I’ve tried really hard to acheive this look but my hair refuses to respond to hot rolers. :(
