  1. Alie says:

    Hi,
I’ve been bored with my hair pretty much all my life, I’ve had all kinds of colors and highlights, and everything from medium w/ bangs to supershort, to pretty long, almost always with some layers. However, Ive never found a style I really really like. Everyone has said I look good w/ any style, but I feel like I’ve never looked great when I do my hair at home. Help me find a really sexy hairstyle that’s easy to style? I do have a strong attraction to curls too, although my hair basically has a mere loose wave…

    • Sophisticate's Hairstyle Guide says:

      Hi, Toma!
Keep an eye out in future issues of Sophisticate’s for your chance to win a makeover. If you’re not happy with your current haircolor, try seeing a new stylist. You may even want to try a salon that employs stylists and colorists separately. This way, you can have a one-on-one with the stylist for your cutting and the colorist for your color.

  3. Toma says:

  5. Joy says:

I need a hair makeover but do not know what style I would like I am 55 years old, want something easy to take care of but not to short. I like the hair style in the middle of this page the before and after cut but don’t know if it would be for me if you go on facebook on my page you can see a picture of me.
    thank you in advance,
    Joy Browning

    • Sophisticate's Hairstyle Guide and Billy Lowe says:

      Hi, Joy!
A great cut and style at any age, or for any hair type really, is a simple shoulder length cut that requires little fuss or time. With this haircut, you can “wash and wear” with just a little shaping cream or serum, or you can blow-dry it smooth. Also, a side-swept bang works well with nearly every face type and creates a soft, sophisticated look. There’s enough length to push them to one side or clip them back. I think you’ll find this cut and style quick and easy to maintain.

  6. Justine says:

Hi Sophisticates! I was wondering whatis in and out for haircuts/hairstyles this year? Another question I have for you is: my hair is thick and fine, straight. The strands are fine, but the density is thick. What are some good hairstyles/haircuts that would work for me? I generally wear it shory with layers, because I have a long to oval shaped face. I generally prefer layers as they take out bulk, but add body. Should I keep my hair short or grow it out? Right now it is an angled bob with short layers in the back and long layers in the front. Also,my skintone is fair to medium, I have golden blonde highlight with some auburn lowlights woven in currently. I am considering going lighter withit, the only thing is I don`t know how light I can go with it. I would like to try a cooler shade of blonde, but I don`t know if it would wash me out. I also, have light green eyes, would going lighter bring them out more? My natural haircolor is strawberry blonde, I dye it because the red fades really fast. What are your suggestions for me?

    • Sophisticate's Hairstyle Guide and Carmine and Beth Minardi says:

      Hi, Justine!
Says Carmine: What’s “out” this year are spiky, punkish haircuts. So much emphasis is being placed on big, wavy, bouncy hair, unless the cut looks very geometric. We are seeing either very short, geometric cuts or much longer hair that can be easily put up. There is a lot more hair dressing—more roller setting and using curling irons. Whether to have short or long hair has a lot to do with your body shape. A smaller, more petite woman can have shorter hair, as it dramatically makes the neck look longer and the body’s height appear taller. Also, short hair requires good makeup, so if your not a makeup person, and you cut you hair very short with or without layers, you risk looking very androgynous. If one is heavy or has a broad chest/shoulders, then consider a haircut that gives lift or height but also has some length in the nape.

Says Beth: Based on your skin tones and current color, we recommend you don’t add lighter pieces of hair to this particular mix. The golden highlights and auburn lowlights will not work with lighter and/or cooler strands of blonde. Even an all-over, cooler look will fight the clients natural undertones. With a natural, strawberry-blonde base, go with the flow. Accent the existing warmth. If you truly wish to experiment, you may want to might weave SLIGHT sections of very blonde tones around the face. But these tones would look better if kept golden or a clear yellow, rather than a white or “cool” blonde.

  7. Jennifer says:

I have either an oval or heart shaped face and really thick naturally curly (now wavy halfway down) hair. I need an easy to do straight style that’s about medium length but not sure. Please help.

    • Bonnie L. Krueger, Editor-in-Chief says:

      Jennifer…

      Hmmm…we’ll check our experts!

    • Sophisticate's Hairstyle Guide and Frank and Belinda Gambuzza says:

      Hi, Jennifer!
An oval face shape is one that opens you up to just about any hairstyle. For ease of styling, a medium-length, lightly layered bob would be great for your face shape and will straighten fairly easily. You want the length to hit no lower than your collarbone, giving you a nice solid shape. The layers need to hit between your jaw line and the ends. Don’t get a lot of layers, because you want to keep fullness through to the bottom. The layers are there to give your haircut movement.

  8. Bonnie L. Krueger, Editor-in-Chief says:

    Morgan:

    Thanks for your note…we’re checking!

  9. Morgan Turner says:

I have red curly hair and im sick of it Its natural but i dont like the fact everyone says its orange i want a new style cut color the max what should i do

    • Sophisticate's Hairstyle Guide and Billy Lowe says:

      Hello Morgan:
I loved reading your question. The funny thing is, people pay a lot of money to have beautiful red, and even orange hair. Look at Tori Amos, Debra Messing, Marcia Cross and even TV’s classic leading lady Lucille Ball. Even though they were all different shades of red or red-orange, these colors are beautiful, bold, daring, and many people really have a lot of fun with these tones.

Have you tried breaking up the reds with dimensional highlights or low-lights? Depending on your natural color level, some deeper tones might look lovely. Ask your salon professional to look at some tones that might enhance your reds, or add dimension. Many people like to enhance the red they have, and others like to neutralize it a little. Stick within 1-2 levels of your own natural color if you plan to change it all over. Have fun.

  10. Beverley Norton says:

how about some new styles for the young at heart, 60 plus.
