A dull blonde hue and a shapeless silhouette is transformed into one bangin’ profile by Noel Delisle of L Salon & Color Group in San Mateo, CA. An all-over platinum haircolor shines with subtle tones of gold cinnamon radiating throughout the lush fringe. Bangs are swept to the side with the help of a flat iron, which also flips face-framing layers in varying directions. Photo by Global Hair & Fashion Group.

Lackluster lengths get a modern makeover from Noel Delisle of L Salon & Color Group in San Mateo, CA. A blasé haircolor becomes shiny and vibrant with an illuminating color transformation resulting in a golden hue with glossy platinum highlights. Hair is shortened to the chin and blow-dried with a round brush to create a curved shape. A few flips of the flat iron helps to enhance texture by crafting a hint of curl and forming a sweeping side bang. Photo by Global Hair & Fashion Group.

  1. Tiffany says:

Hi, you had an issue of your magazine published of Sarah Michelle Gellar, sorry for spelling. I loved her hair in the 3rd season of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I’ve been trying to find pictures of that style on Google but nothing is showing up. I want to have that picture to show my stylist but I can’t find it anywhere! Please help me out if you can!

    • Sophisticate's Hairstyle Guide says:

      Hi, Tiffany!
While we don’t have a picture of Sarah Michelle Gellar from Season 3 of Buffy, we can tell you to there are some similar styles in our October issue, on sale next week! Check out the Clip & Snip section, where you’ll find plenty of platinum-hued looks that fall just below the shoulder.

And…look for an upcoming feature on Sarah. She’ll be back on prime-time television this fall, can’t wait!

  2. Lori says:

Any ideas for hairstyles for a 50 year old, round face (ok fat face!) with stick straight hair? The salon laughs when I get it cut saying people pay for hair as straight as mine! Thanks!

    • Sophisticate's Hairstyle Guide says:

      Hi, Lori!
Many of us tend to want what we don’t have! When asked how do women get gorgeous waves, celebrity stylist Michael Shaun Corby told Sophisticate’s it’s best to skip a day between shampoos to start! “Beachy waves get better if you live in them.” Try fashioning pincurls or twisting your hair in a scrunchie at night. When you wake up, gently loosen your hair and mist a touch of hairspray for long-lasting curls.

  3. Caitlyn says:

i love polished pretty’s bangs! i have an oval face…. would those kind of bangs look good?
    Thanks a bunch!

    • Sophisticate's Hairstyle Guide says:

      Hi, Caitlyn!
With an oval face shape, you can wear any look you want! Try a sideswept bang, which looks great with sophisticated bobs, long beachy waves and many other style ideas you’ll find in the current issue of Sophisticate’s—on stands now!

  4. lori says:

i was wondering if you could tell me if the shag haircut is still in style? im 46 yrs.old and would like to color my naturally blonde hair auburn and get in a shag. also would the shag be a too young look for my age?

    • Sophisticate's Hairstyle Guide says:

      Hi, Lori!
The shag haircut is timeless! You can even try a modern version and go for a shaggy bob like stylish Sophisitcate’s favorite/television star Lisa Rinna. Check out her classic look on the Sophisticate’s home page.

  5. Brittany says:

  6. Riza Camille says:

My face shape is like the face shape of Maria Kanellis.
What is her Hair Color? And her hair cut?

    • Sophisticate's Hairstyle Guide says:

      Hi, Riza!
In the photos featured in the Sophisticate’s Hairstyle Guide Exclusive Interview, Maria Kanellis has long layers, which helps remove some of the bulk of her coarse, wavy hair. The former WWE Diva and Celebrity Apprentice contestant tells Sophisticate’s, “I go through all different stages of red, but right now it’s a fiery red.”

  7. Ema says:

I have short hair and would like to have long hair but it just seems like its taking forever to grow. Also I don’t know what lengh I should let it grow to. I have sort of a dimand shape face, so what would yo recommand??

    • Sophisticate's Hairstyle Guide says:

      Hi, Ema!
Hair growth takes time and patience. While you’re waiting, you could try wearing hair extensions! As for a style that will complement your face shape, pick up a copy of the February 2011 issue of SHG. It’s the one with Christina Aguilera on the cover! Check out the “Face Shape Styling” article for great tips.

  8. Dani says:

I have wavy red hair, but I’m running out of things to do with it. I straighten it most days. My hair doesn’t curl very well either. Most of the time when i straighten it, it doesn’t stay straight. I want a change, but I don’t look very good in short hair…what should I do?

    • Sophisticate's Hairstyle Guide says:

      Hi, Dani!
If you have naturally wavy hair, try enhancing those curls! Find a mousse that works for you and distribute the product evenly throughout damp strands. Blow-dry using a diffuser attachment and scrunch your hair as you dry it. Once the waves have taken shape, divide hair into sections and wrap strands around a curling iron. Allow the ringlets to cool, then gently tousle them with your fingers to create loose waves—and don’t forget the hairspray!

  9. Faith says:

I have naturaly curly, extremely thick dark brown hair and a heart shaped face. My hair is about two inches past my shoulders and ends up in some time of upsweep every day due to it being so thick and unmanagable. If I could change it for one day, I would straighten my hair and have it cut into a shag. I would also add highlights.

    • Sophisticate's Hairstyle Guide says:

      Hi, Faith!
Go for it! We’re all about experimenting with cut, color and style.

  10. cheryl hover says:

hello i am a older female. And I feel I don’t look to great with short hair. what is a becoming length for a lady in her eariler 50′s? i think longer hair is too young for me. help!

    • Sophisticate's Hairstyle Guide says:

      Hi,Cheryl!
50s old? No way! We have some fabulous looks for you in our anniversary issue on sale now. Do you have to keep it short? Absolutely not. 2010 is about rule-breaking and what makes you feel wonderful. Celebrities over 50 like television’s Dana Delaney (56!) rock a great shoulder-length style as do stars like
Madonna, Leeza Gibbons, Jennifer Grey…all wear a mix of different looks with huge success. It all depends on what you see when you look in the mirror and how you feel. It’s about you.

  11. Alie says:

    Hi,
I’ve been bored with my hair pretty much all my life, I’ve had all kinds of colors and highlights, and everything from medium w/ bangs to supershort, to pretty long, almost always with some layers. However, Ive never found a style I really really like. Everyone has said I look good w/ any style, but I feel like I’ve never looked great when I do my hair at home. Help me find a really sexy hairstyle that’s easy to style? I do have a strong attraction to curls too, although my hair basically has a mere loose wave…

    • Sophisticate's Hairstyle Guide says:

      Hi, Alie!
The latest issue of Sophisticate’s is on sale next week and features plenty of looks you’ll love! Just because your hair is not naturally curly, it doesn’t mean you can’t sport a fabulous curly look. The key to locking in those spirals is in the styling process. Work a dime-size amount of mousse throughout damp hair before blow-drying with a round brush. When hair is completely dry, divide it into sections and use two curling irons in different sizes to craft spiral curls. Before the curls cool, secure pin-curls using bobby pins so the spirals cool down in a coiled shape. Once you remove the hairpins, mist a bit of hairspray and you’re good to go!

      Hi, Toma!
Keep an eye out in future issues of Sophisticate’s for your chance to win a makeover. If you’re not happy with your current haircolor, try seeing a new stylist. You may even want to try a salon that employs stylists and colorists separately. This way, you can have a one-on-one with the stylist for your cutting and the colorist for your color.

  15. Joy says:

I need a hair makeover but do not know what style I would like I am 55 years old, want something easy to take care of but not to short. I like the hair style in the middle of this page the before and after cut but don’t know if it would be for me if you go on facebook on my page you can see a picture of me.
    thank you in advance,
    Joy Browning

    • Sophisticate's Hairstyle Guide and Billy Lowe says:

      Hi, Joy!
A great cut and style at any age, or for any hair type really, is a simple shoulder length cut that requires little fuss or time. With this haircut, you can “wash and wear” with just a little shaping cream or serum, or you can blow-dry it smooth. Also, a side-swept bang works well with nearly every face type and creates a soft, sophisticated look. There’s enough length to push them to one side or clip them back. I think you’ll find this cut and style quick and easy to maintain.

  16. Justine says:

Hi Sophisticates! I was wondering whatis in and out for haircuts/hairstyles this year? Another question I have for you is: my hair is thick and fine, straight. The strands are fine, but the density is thick. What are some good hairstyles/haircuts that would work for me? I generally wear it shory with layers, because I have a long to oval shaped face. I generally prefer layers as they take out bulk, but add body. Should I keep my hair short or grow it out? Right now it is an angled bob with short layers in the back and long layers in the front. Also,my skintone is fair to medium, I have golden blonde highlight with some auburn lowlights woven in currently. I am considering going lighter withit, the only thing is I don`t know how light I can go with it. I would like to try a cooler shade of blonde, but I don`t know if it would wash me out. I also, have light green eyes, would going lighter bring them out more? My natural haircolor is strawberry blonde, I dye it because the red fades really fast. What are your suggestions for me?

    • Sophisticate's Hairstyle Guide and Carmine and Beth Minardi says:

      Hi, Justine!
Says Carmine: What’s “out” this year are spiky, punkish haircuts. So much emphasis is being placed on big, wavy, bouncy hair, unless the cut looks very geometric. We are seeing either very short, geometric cuts or much longer hair that can be easily put up. There is a lot more hair dressing—more roller setting and using curling irons. Whether to have short or long hair has a lot to do with your body shape. A smaller, more petite woman can have shorter hair, as it dramatically makes the neck look longer and the body’s height appear taller. Also, short hair requires good makeup, so if your not a makeup person, and you cut you hair very short with or without layers, you risk looking very androgynous. If one is heavy or has a broad chest/shoulders, then consider a haircut that gives lift or height but also has some length in the nape.

Says Beth: Based on your skin tones and current color, we recommend you don’t add lighter pieces of hair to this particular mix. The golden highlights and auburn lowlights will not work with lighter and/or cooler strands of blonde. Even an all-over, cooler look will fight the clients natural undertones. With a natural, strawberry-blonde base, go with the flow. Accent the existing warmth. If you truly wish to experiment, you may want to might weave SLIGHT sections of very blonde tones around the face. But these tones would look better if kept golden or a clear yellow, rather than a white or “cool” blonde.

  17. Jennifer says:

I have either an oval or heart shaped face and really thick naturally curly (now wavy halfway down) hair. I need an easy to do straight style that’s about medium length but not sure. Please help.

    • Bonnie L. Krueger, Editor-in-Chief says:

      Jennifer…

      Hmmm…we’ll check our experts!

    • Sophisticate's Hairstyle Guide and Frank and Belinda Gambuzza says:

      Hi, Jennifer!
An oval face shape is one that opens you up to just about any hairstyle. For ease of styling, a medium-length, lightly layered bob would be great for your face shape and will straighten fairly easily. You want the length to hit no lower than your collarbone, giving you a nice solid shape. The layers need to hit between your jaw line and the ends. Don’t get a lot of layers, because you want to keep fullness through to the bottom. The layers are there to give your haircut movement.

  18. Bonnie L. Krueger, Editor-in-Chief says:

    Morgan:

    Thanks for your note…we’re checking!

  19. Morgan Turner says:

I have red curly hair and im sick of it Its natural but i dont like the fact everyone says its orange i want a new style cut color the max what should i do

    • Sophisticate's Hairstyle Guide and Billy Lowe says:

      Hello Morgan:
I loved reading your question. The funny thing is, people pay a lot of money to have beautiful red, and even orange hair. Look at Tori Amos, Debra Messing, Marcia Cross and even TV’s classic leading lady Lucille Ball. Even though they were all different shades of red or red-orange, these colors are beautiful, bold, daring, and many people really have a lot of fun with these tones.

Have you tried breaking up the reds with dimensional highlights or low-lights? Depending on your natural color level, some deeper tones might look lovely. Ask your salon professional to look at some tones that might enhance your reds, or add dimension. Many people like to enhance the red they have, and others like to neutralize it a little. Stick within 1-2 levels of your own natural color if you plan to change it all over. Have fun.

  20. Beverley Norton says:

how about some new styles for the young at heart, 60 plus.

    • Bonnie L. Krueger, Editor-in-Chief says:

      Hi Beverley:

Will try and feature! Check out our current issue; we have tons of styles to choose from!
