If you haven’t heard of singer/songwriter Meghan Trainor, take one listen to her catchy hit song “All About That Bass” and you’ll be hooked (don’t say we didn’t warn you!). On top of her incredible singing talent, this chanteuse is stylish, sassy and has gorgeous hair! In this exclusive interview, Meghan chats with Sophisticate’s Hairstyle Guide about her love of extensions, her dream collaboration and more…
How has your life changed with the success of your hit song “All About That Bass?”
It’s pretty much the same except I’m busier and more popular! I’m [always] on my cell phone and I have a lot of new friends to talk to.
What do you hope fans take away from your songs?
I hope they can relate to what I’m talking about and I hope they get [some] new party jams they can dance to!
OK, let’s talk about your hair!
My current hair is a mess! I have extensions in there that have grown out and I’ve got to get them fixed. But, I like my hair long and I like it thick. I have thin hair so I love extensions. I’m not really a “girly girl” and I don’t really know how to do hair, so [my hairstylists] do my hair for me, which is awesome. I just tell them I like it down and wavy.
Do you have a go-to hairstylist?
I work with a few different hairstylists because I travel to different states, but I love anyone who wants to do my hair for me!
Tell us about your natural hair…
It’s a little passed my shoulders, but it’s super thin—which is crazy because my mom has super-thick, brown hair, so I don’t know where [my thin hair] came from! My hair is thin, smooth and soft.
What’s your styling route like?
I shower, I bathe and I usually blow-dry my hair and then I’ll keep it straight and normal-looking for the rest of the day. But yeah, I don’t even know how to style it myself; I don’t know how to do any of that stuff!
Do you have any favorite hair products?
For hairspray, I use Big Sexy Hair. I like that it makes my hair big and sexy! I also use a Neutrogena leave-in [cream] because my hair is so long it gets tangled.
How has your hair routine changed since your success?
Before this, I never, ever had extensions and I never ever really got my haircut that often. The only thing I did do was highlights, only three times in my life. I was never really allowed to do anything to my hair [growing up] so now I get to put extensions in and be a pop star!
Have you learned any new tips or tricks about your hair from working with hairstylists?
Kind of! I watch what they’re doing and I try [to learn], but I [still] can’t even curl my hair!
How do you like to wear your hair when performing?
I like my hair down. It’s been up for a few shows, but I like it down so I can whip it! I like it wavy and big and poofy at the top.
Are you into makeup?
I don’t know a lot about makeup [either]—I’m trying to learn that, too. I’m just so lazy and I [never] have the right type of makeup. I like simple makeup—like when it looks like you don’t have a lot of makeup on but you clearly got it and you’re rocking it. I also like the “cat eye” [look].
Do you have any favorite makeup products?
The girl who does Carrie Underwood’s makeup in Nashville [Melissa Schleicher] has a lipstick that’s amazing because it’s a regular lipstick, but it’s like a gloss, too. It’s amazing! I also love fake eyelashes. I love that they give you that body on your eyes, but I suck [at putting them on].
What’s your go-to outfit?
Hoodies and black leggings. I wear comfy clothes when I’m not on the road.
What outfits do you like performing in?
I love the cute dresses [my fashion team] puts me in.
What’s your guilty pleasure?
T-Pain; I love rocking out to T-Pain a lot.
What does your idea weekend consist of?
Just hanging out with my bestie Emmy and watching TV for hours on the couch.
What are some of your favorite TV shows?
Orange is the New Black, Modern Family and South Park.
What’s one thing your fans don’t know about you?
I’m terrified of the dark!
Who is your celebrity hair crush?
Beyoncé can rock any hairstyle and Kim Kardashian always has awesome hair.
What artist would you love to collaborate with?
Bruno Mars, for sure!
