How to play with platinum just in time for spring.

Nicole Richie definitely gave us hair envy when she flaunted a voluminous, lavender upsweep at the 2014 Met Gala and we couldn’t wait to get the fabulous style deets from Wella Professionals Celebrity Stylist Ambassador Andy LeCompte!

Inspiration: “Nicole’s dress has a very ’90s feel so we wanted to create a hair look that was reminiscent of the same decade,” says hair pro LeCompte. “The look is very simple and elegant, but still a bit undone and loose.”

Step-By-Step Styling:

  1. Start with freshly washed and conditioned hair using a lightweight shampoo and conditioner.
  2. Blow-dry hair and once dry, take two-inch sections, mist with Wella Professionals Thermal Image Heat Protection Spray, and curl using a 1 and 1/2 inch barrel curling iron. Set each curl with a clip and continue curling until the whole head is set.
  3. Allow hair to cool for 15 minutes and remove the clips. Without brushing through, backcomb and tease the roots to create volume and texture in the hair.
  4. Next, distribute a few drops of shine oil to help tame the hair and make it easier to style.
  5. Then, take large sections of hair—one large section on top and two smaller pieces on each side—and twist toward the back of the head, pulling the pieces into a ponytail by the occipital bone.
  6. Twist ponytail into a bun, securing with several pin and set the look with a light misting of finishing spray to control flyaways.
