Do you love your sassy red snip? Keep it fresh this fall with help from world-renowned haircolorist Beth Minardi.

  • Choose Wisely “Fabulous color is warm, shiny, dimensional and buttery,” shares world-renowned color pro and educator Beth Minardi. “Try on wigs to determine which colors work best with your skin tone and personality. From there, consult with your professional colorist to help evaluate your hue options.”
  • See A Pro “The worst thing you can do is do-it-yourself shades much darker or lighter than your natural color,” explains Minardi. “You should stay as close to your natural tone as possible. Ultimately, professional colorist can help point you in the right direction.”
  • Take Care “Always wear a hat, hood or scarf in breezy weather,” advises Minardi. “Not only will this protect your color from the harsh temps, but it will keep your style looking great. Also, shampoo less frequently and condition each time your wash your hair. By doing so, you’ll extend the vibrancy and longevity of your shade.”

    TALK BACK!

Have you ever gone red? Would you ever try it?

Talk back to SHG at “Red”

    1. Paige Michaels says:

Hi, I am confused on what I should do. I am 15 and have light blonde hair, an have always wanted it lighter, but every time I try it isn’t as light as I want. I’m considering going a light reddish brown color, but I’m not sure how it will look, and everyone I ask is 50-50 on the idea. I have vey pale skin and freckles (a lot in the summer) and very bright blue, grayish eyes. So I’m wondering what I should do, can the red brown idea, or keep going light blonde.

    2. Alicia Burns says:

Hello, Sophisticates Hairstyling Guide, I just turned 42 yesterday on my birthday. And I bought this haircoloring from Revlon called Colorsilk Luminista. The color is red, it has a vibrant color for dark hair, high-shine mango butter formula leaves hair in better condition. It has 100% gray coverage, permanent color, and 1 application so Im going to give it a try. So happy haircoloring and enjoy.

    3. linda says:

I have always wanted red hair but people say that you can only wear certain colors with red. Is that true???
Also what is the best way to color your hair salon or in store bought boxes of die????

      • Bonnie L. Krueger, Editor-in-Chief says:

        Hi Linda:

Your color choices depend on your complexion as well. Black, gray, white, blue, green all look great with red hair. Some brown shades do as well…but experiment and have fun!

As far as salon color vs. at-home color–it depends on brand and user. If you have a good colorist in your area they are trained and will be able to make certain you achieve the color you want.

        Thank you for writing!

    4. Monica says:

I was natural blonde that went a light auburn shade for a while, I had the complexion of a redhead, (freckles, pale skin, bright green eyes) but miss my blonde shade, is there any way I can go strawberry blonde without damaging my hair too much, or bleaching my hair?

      • Bonnie L. Krueger, Editor-in-Chief says:

        Hi Monica:

Check with your colorist so they can really look at your hair and see what the tolerance is.

        Good luck!

    5. lexxus says:

chelsea, i have dark brown hair and i dyed my hair Bright red at home with sallys, i had to dye it once a month. if you want it bright, dont go with reds go with magenta it looks more red then red.

    6. Chelsea says:

      Hi!
I have been using red color for quite some time now, from box color to professional (from Sally’s) and I have the biggest issue when it comes to fading! I have naturally dark curly hair and I want a vibrant tone of red, which I always achieve, but it always ends up a dull reddish-orange tone after about two weeks, any suggestions?

      • Sophisticate's Hairstyle Guide says:

        Hi Chelsea,
Keep an eye out for the next issue of Sophisticate’s! We think you’ll find the information included in the next issue to be very helpful.

      • Shelby says:

        Chelsea-
I’m not a hair expert, but i know there are hair color brands that make extra-vibrant hair color especially for people with naturally dark hair. Plus, they are easy at-home colors that you don’t have to spend more than $10. Check Walmart! as far as fading goes, like i said, i’m no hair pro and don’t know much, but there are fade-proof shampoos and conditioners (suave has some;they’re super-cheap too!) and i heard washing your hair with cold water helps-i don’t know if that really works.

      • Brianna says:

I have naturally dark dark brown hair and dye it a copper red. It used to fade horribly to an almost strawberry blonde. I found that the best for me to help with fading was to get a color glaze. Ulta makes one for reds. You use it once or twice a week as needed and it deposits a little extra red in your hair. It’s been a big help for me with my color fade

    7. Hanna says:

      Hi, I’m Hanna.
I’ve never had a professional color my hair before. I’ve always used John Freida hair coloring. I have been pleased with their results but im looking for a little red hint now. Im just scared to use John Freida for this mission because they have dark red, and that’s not wat I want. Im looking for a color that will give me the red tint in looking for without making me look like a want to be red head.
I have the complexion of a red head but have dark blonde hair. Any suggestions?!?!!

      • Sophisticate's Hairstyle Guide says:

        Hi Hanna,
We’re checking with our experts and will have an answer for you soon!

      • Sophisticate's Hairstyle Guide and Suzie Bond says:

        Hi Hanna,
This might be the perfect time to seek a professional. Changing previously tinted hair involves more than just choosing a different box. The virgin hair will look different than the previously tinted hair. A professional will not only have endless options for your target shade, but also be able to make it match from root to tip. It sounds like you need some mixology for the perfect shade and some decolorization on the midlengths and ends to make it all match. Best of luck!

    8. Bryana says:

So, i have dark brown hair and have recently dyed it auburn red. But i want it to be bright red. How can i dye my hair so it looks like that without bleacing it?

      • Sophisticate's Hairstyle Guide says:

        Hi, Bryana!
In order for the bright haircolor to show up, your hair needs to be a lighter color—in the blonde family. It’s a good idea to leave the lightening process up to a professional colorist so you make sure you are lifting your haircolor safely and maintaining the health of your hair.

    9. Abby says:

Just wanted to let you know that this is a picture of Lacey Brown from American Idol Season 9 and is NOT Cynthia Nixon. Thanks.

    10. Gloria says:

Hello! My boyfriend wants me to go red, and I love that picture you have w/ the red & lighter red as highlights (the picture above). My hair color is currently all platinum blonde. But I have long hair, it goes past the middle of my back. Are there any suggestions on what I can do cut-wise? I don’t want to cut my hair at all, but I need some body, cause it’s almost all one length! PLEEEASE help w/ comments & advice, thanks!

      • Sophisticate's Hairstyle Guide says:

        Hi, Gloria!
If you want to add body without sacrificing length, you could try asking your stylist for long layers. This still requires cutting your hair, but you don’t have to cut all of your hair! Set up a consultation with your stylist to help you decide on a hairstyle. Ask for ideas that will give your mane the body and bounce you’re looking for and be sure to tell the hair pro that you don’t want to cut your hair short. As for the color? Going from platinum blonde to red is not usually difficult, but trust a professional colorist to find the right shade for you. And remember—red hair requires a lot of maintenance because it fades quickly.

    11. Tracy says:

I have dark blonde hair with extremely light blonde streaks that are 100% natural and completely white eyelashes/eyebrows. I’ve always wanted to go red and have tried home color in the past to no avail (turns out pink, orange, etc.) I’m ready to try professional color at my aveda salon, but don’t want to do anything that will look ridiculous. Any suggestions?

      • Sophisticate's Hairstyle Guide and Suzie Bond says:

        Hi, Tracy!
Since you are so light to begin with, going with a strawberry blonde or light apricot might be the best way to avoid pink. Your colorist should know how to achieve the exact color you want without pink or off tones. Have faith and try tinting your brows too! Something a bit browner and deeper would look best.

    12. Shelby says:

      Hi, my name is Shelby.
I am 15 years old and my hair is a reddish/ mousy blonde color. Everybody says they like the cocor of my hair, but I don’t like it. I want to go darker… maybe a brown or darker red, but I don’t know if it will look good. Should I go for it or just get highlights or something? I have a light/medium skin tone and blue-grey eyes. Any ideas??

      • Sophisticate's Hairstyle Guide says:

        Hi, Shelby!

      • Sophisticate's Hairstyle Guide and Suzie Bond says:

        Hi, Shelby!
Be careful not to go too dark, as having a lighter complexion with a deep shade could have you looking a little washed out. Try going one or two shades darker than your natural haircolor. Set up a consultation with your colorist, who should be able to help you achieve a hue that will go perfectly with your skin tone.
