  • Statement-Making Red “If somebody likes red hair, make a younger statement by using chunky pieces of color,” explains celebrity stylist, salon owner and Wella Color Charm Ambassador Ricardo Rojas about color placement. “The blonde is more classic and for someone more sophisticated—less rock and roll. Red is more like Rihanna; the brunette is more natural looking. It all depends.”
  • Crimson Coif When it comes to wearing a scarlet hue, finding the shade you can wear is key in finding the perfect complement to your style. “Definitely the ones who have a paler complexion!” notes celebrity stylist, salon owner and Wella Color Charm Ambassador Ricardo Rojas about the woman who can wear red. “Surprisingly, it works for every age—from 20 to 60.”
  • Happy Highlights “Highlights are dramatic if you want to add some life around your face,” adds celebrity stylist, salon owner and Wella Color Charm Ambassador Ricardo Rojas. “I love the subtle tones. I love a really dark red to a bright red and golden highlights and love seeing the roots natural and getting lighter at the ends.”

    1. Jess says:

      Hello Sophisticate’s Hairstyle Guide!
I have never dyed my hair before and decided recently that I would like a change. I have always loved red hair, but I am not sure which shade would be best for me and am worried about making the wrong choice. I have light brown hair with some natural gold and it has gotten darker over the winter. My eyes are hazel/brown. My eyebrows are darker than my hair is. My skin is pale right now, but can tan over the summer, and my veins appear blue. Do you think it is possible for me to go red? And if you think so, could you supply a photo of that shade or a link to a box of non-permanent color that I could buy? I would like to do it at home to avoid the salon price. Thanks for your help!

      • Sophisticate's Hairstyle Guide says:

        Hi, Jess!
Light skin goes well with red hair. If Mother Nature has given you a light brown shade with flecks of gold, a warm auburn could look nice on you. Page through the Clip & Snip section of the March 2011 Sophisticate’s (on sale tomorrow!) and find a shade you like. Clip out the photo and take it to your stylist. While you can color your hair at home, you may not get the results you’re looking for. Many salon professionals mix a few shades together to achieve the exact color you want.

      • Shelby says:

Jess, I think you should go for a darker red or maybe some highlights. I think red looks really cool with hazel eyes. :)

    2. Hayley says:

I’ve gone red (like a burgandy red) before and I recently dyed my hair back to dark brown which is my natural hair color, and perfectly matches my eyebrows. I was wondering do your eyebrows always have to match your hair color? This is the reason why I’m hesitating to dye my hair back to red.
      Thanks for your help.

      • Sophisticate's Hairstyle Guide says:

        Hi, Hayley!
It’s up to you! Some women love having light hair and dark eyebrows (and the other way around). If you’ve colored your hair red before, don’t be afraid to do it again.

    3. Riza Camille says:

Does red hair match with brown eyes? Cause I have brown eyes and planning to color my hair red. Should I dye my hair red?
Thanks.. I’ll wait for your reply.

      • Sophisticate's Hairstyle Guide says:

        Hi, Riza!
There are plenty of brown-eyed beauties that color their hair red. It’s more about skin tone and personality. Pick up a copy of the March 2011 issue of SHG (on stands tomorrow!) and take our haircolor quiz to see which hue is right for you!

    4. Riza Camille says:

Dark Brown is my natural hair color. But just a week ago, I dyed it medium brown, and everybody says that nothing went different, nothing happen. I want to dye my hair red, cause I really love red. My face shapes just like Maria Kanellis. Should I dye it red? What’s Maria Kanellis hair color? Thanks.

      • Sophisticate's Hairstyle Guide says:

        Hi, Riza!
In our exclusive interview with Maria Kanellis, the sexy star revealed she colors her natural dark brown hair all different shades of red. Go for it! Keep in mind, red haircolor fades. Maria recommends a reddening treatment every week to keep the haircolor vibrant.

    5. Cheyenne says:

      Hey!
I am a brunette (about a medium brown) and I am considering going full on Red. My skin is a Golden Honey and I have Hazel – Green eyes.I have dyed my hair in the past and I don’t want to damage it any further so, is there any “healthy” way I can dye my hair without frying it and what color should I go with?
      Thank you!

      • Sophisticate's Hairstyle Guide says:

        Hi, Cheyenne!
Lightening your hair could cause damage if you go more than three levels lighter than your natural haircolor. Green eyes look great with red hair, and a soft shade would look nice with your skin tone. You may want to try a few highlights before going with all-over hue to see if you like the red shade.

    6. Kayla says:

My natural haircolor is strawberry blonde, and I have very fair skin and hazel eyes. I have been considering going for a darker red. What color should I choose?

      • Sophisticate's Hairstyle Guide says:

        Hi, Kayla!
Be careful not to go too dark, as a super dark shade against your fair skin could make you look a little ghost-like. Set up a consultation with a professional colorist, who will be able to help you make the decision on how dark you could go. Best of luck!

    7. Cal says:

P.S. My veins are green (I thought that might help with the idea of what red with what skin tone).

    8. Cal says:

Hi, I’m considering go red like Marcia Cross, Joanna Garcia, or Alexis Bledel. I feel like I need a change. I have brown eyes and the darkest shade of brown with some highlights. I wear medium beige foundation by Revlon…I guess that means I’m medium toned skin though people tell me I’m olive tone, yet I look pale white in pictures these days. During the summer I get so tan people make jokes about if I have black in me. Hopefully all this skin tone info will help. I tend to be drawn to copper colors, but not sure what shade of red would be good on me. I did have red hair for a while a couple years ago. It was crushed garnet by Loreal feria. I know I can do that shade, but I want something different and something more bold and that would look good with my white winter skin or even warm me up. I want to look like a different me as I have a different outlook on life these days. What color would you recommend?

      • Sophisticate's Hairstyle Guide says:

        Hi, Cal!
We’re checking with our color expert and we’ll get back to you soon!

      • Sophisticate's Hairstyle Guide and Suzie Bond says:

        Hi, Cal!
Winter is the perfect time of year to go red when your skin is at a loss for that summer spark. Marcia Cross is the most vibrant of the three ladies you mentioned. Avoid the golden copper she sports in the summer months because it could make you feel even more pale or even bring the “green” out in your olive complexion. The rich copper red she wears would probably suit you best. Joanna Garcia and Alexis Bledel seem to sport a browner version of red, which would whisper a bit more than Marcia’s color. The shade you choose is up to you. Have a wonderfully vibrant holiday!

    9. Lisa Dyson says:

I want to go red. I have colored hair now it is high lites and low lites. I have fair skin and green eyes. What color red should I go to. I like Ashlee Simpsons color but I love Marcia Cross color. Do you think you can help.

      • Sophisticate's Hairstyle Guide says:

        Hi, Lisa!
We’ll have an answer for you soon—stay tuned!

      • Sophisticate's Hairstyle Guide and Suzie Bond says:

        Hi, Lisa!
The best part about having dimension in your hair already is that wherever you go with your new color, it will automatically have dimension! Let your personality decide how red you want to be. Ashlee Simpson’s color is a little more natural. If you want your new color to whisper, that shade is a good choice. Marcia Cross’ color is more vibrant and will look incredible with your skin tone. Choose that one if you want your color to speak a bit louder.

    10. angie says:

i’m thinking about ‘becoming’ a red-head for a while & i’m wondering what’s a good shade of red for me. i have light skin but super dark brown hair. any suggestions?

      • Sophisticate's Hairstyle Guide and Suzie Bond says:

        Hi, Angie!
The easiest place to go is close to your natural level with a cool red tone. If you stray too far from that natural darkness, you will need to get a retouch sooner than later. If you really want a vibrant red shade, keep color appointments at every four weeks.

    11. Carrie says:

i have natural dark brown hair. i died it black a few months ago but i didnt like it. So after it grew out a little bit, i tried to lighten it up a bit, but it did nothing to the black hair and turned my natural hair lighter. Then it grew out even more. Big OOPS i know. haha. So NOW i have 3 different shades of colors in my hair. I want to go red, but is it even possible to do now?

      • Sophisticate's Hairstyle Guide and Suzie Bond says:

        Hi, Carrie!
It is possible, but if there were ever a time to seek a professional, now is it! Your hair needs to be treated with different products for each different horizontal section of color. You can seek a qualified professional at LOREALProfessionnel.com in the salon locator section. Best of luck!

    12. Anna says:

HELP!! On failing to locate a back issue of Sophisticates Hairstyle Guide (August 2010) I am desperately trying to achieve a very vibrant red colour which I saw in your Aug edition (page 109). I had auburn hair but have had no real success with recent colours. I would be so grateful for advice on how to achieve this particular colour or how or where to locate back issue – strange that Aug classed as a back issue. Thanks

      • Sophisticate's Hairstyle Guide and Suzie Bond says:

        Hi, Anna!
Reds are so much fun! The more vibrant red you are trying to achieve, the lighter you need to take your natural color. Raising the developer may help. If a vibrant cool red is what you are seeking, raising the developer might be in order along with layering the cool red with a demi-permanent after the first color step. Natural copper exists inside your hair, so making it appear cool can take more than one step.

    13. Kimberly says:

i have fair skin with blue eyes and i want to dye my hair a red but i don’t know what color red and if it would look good on me can you please help me?

      • Sophisticate's Hairstyle Guide and Suzie Bond says:

        Hi, Kimberly!
Not only do all skin tones lend themselves to redhead potential, but you are the perfect candidate. Your options are endless! Let your decision be made by whether you want your haircolor to whisper, speak or scream. A whisper would be a soft, strawberry blonde or medium auburn. Speaking would be slightly brighter and screaming would be a very vibrant copper or rich, bright, cool red. The most believable reds are multidimensional, so ask for a few highlights and lowlights to be incorporated into your fabulous makeover!

    14. Kim says:

I’m a natural blond, but I’m considering going red. But I’m not sure which shade to go with. I have a very light skin tone, and there’s a touch of red in my hair already, but very little. I really want a darker shade, but I’m concerned because my skin is so fair. What would you recommend?

      • Sophisticate's Hairstyle Guide and Daniel Keane says:

        Hi, Kim!
Since you have very fair skin, stay in the lighter shades of red, leaning toward and orange base vs. a blue base…like a strawberry blonde. Ask your colorist to do this color in foils to create a very natural and effective look. If you want to go with all-over color, use a demi-permanent shade for more complete coverage.

    15. Justine says:

Hi, I was wondering if you can tell me what shades of red I can pull off. My natural color is strawberry blonde and I want to make my green eyes really pop out.I also have a fair to medium skin tone. What red tones would do this for me? Should I go more coppery or auburn? Should I stick with more warm or cool tones when it comes to red? Should I go lighter or darker when it comes to red?

      • Sophisticate's Hairstyle Guide and Suzie Bond says:

        Hi, Justine!
Since you’re already a redhead, chances are you can carry either copper or auburn hues. Choose coppery tones in the summer and deepen the hue with a little auburn added in for cooler weather. Natural red hair tends to be a bit more difficult to penetrate and make vibrant. So I wouldn’t worry about being too red as that’s difficult to achieve. Your colorist will know to shoot a little brighter than desired to get the proper amount of intensity. Try asking for a medium copper with apricot highlights for the summer months!

    16. AmandaC says:

I am a red head at the moment I used Wella Koleston 8.43 it comes up very orangy red I wondered if their was anything i could mix with it to kick a little of the orange out without having to go dark again as I love the red. from about three inches out down to my shoulders is a very natural looking red but the top couple of inches is much darker and fake looking was thinking of mixing half a tube of 8.43 and 8.34 what you think Thanks Amanda

      • Sophisticate's Hairstyle Guide and Suzie Bond says:

        Hi, Amanda!
When looking at natural red hair, it’s generally slightly deeper and browner at the scalp and more vibrant midshaft to the ends. By adding a shade that dominates gold with a touch of copper, you will bring the intensity down a bit. I suggest adding one level deeper in the same shade first. That should keep your scalp from looking too intense. Then, balance your previously tinted hair with the same shade you always use. Remember, reds can be extremely vibrant and look natural if they are slightly muted at the scalp.

    17. Karen says:

I have gone red. It was a rich burgundy and I loved it. I let my hair grow back to brown but most of my friends and family say I should color it red again. Being a redhead always makes me feel sassy!

      • Sophisticate's Hairstyle Guide says:

        Hi, Karen!
We love all hair hues, but your hair should be any color you want! If red makes you feel sassy then go for it, girlfriend!

    18. Jennifer says:

I’ve said it before natural redhead and I love it.Please could you put more redheads in your magazine.Proud ones especially for us natural gals maybe some of them.Plus dye job ones but I like to every now and then see a natural redhead plus maybe one on a cover.I’m not sure how many you have put on a cover but maybe every now and then.

      • Sophisticate's Hairstyle Guide says:

        Hello, Jennifer:
Thanks for the suggestion! We think redheads are gorgeous, too, and we try to include the great ones like Debra Messing, Marcia Cross, Isla Fisher and others in as many issues as we can, as well as great hair models who are wearing various shades of crimson. We’ll keep including them!

    19. Jess says:

      Hello love your website.
How do I get the hairstyle in the first picture?

      • Sophisticate's Hairstyle Guide says:

        Hello, Jess:
To achieve the style in the model photo above, start by priming your freshly shampooed hair with a volumizing mousse. Using a round brush while blow-drying, curve the brush down the length of the hair from the roots to the tips, lifting at the roots to plump up the volume at the crown. If you need extra height, you can set hair on large Velcro rollers, mist with hairspray and heat-set with your blow-dryer. Finish with a flat iron along the bottom half, and apply a shine serum with finger tips over the entire mane. You’ll look FABULOUS!

    20. Diana says:

there was a hair style and color that I like back in may, It was on the cover. How can I look it up?
