polished profile
Just because you’re a career woman it doesn’t mean you can’t look like a super model. Take your short style to the next level by pumping up the volume and opting for a white-hot hue. While hair is extra short at the sides, leaving a little length at the crown gives you plenty of styling options.

Vamp it up and create touchable textures using a combination of blow-drying, round-brushing and flat-ironing your cool crop. Enhance piecey layers by placing a dime-size amount of pomade in your hands, rubbing them together and working the product throughout your hair for a rock star vibe.

Heyyy!!!!
I have the same problem as Cindy; I have short, thin hair. I’m in middle school, but I want a mature pixie cut. I have a heart shaped face. I’ve looked all over google images for the right cut, but I don’t know what it would look like on me, and I’m afraid to get the cut and then look bad. I still have to get braces, so I need that taken into consideration. I really need help!!! I want a pixie!!! It’s really hot in the summer where I live, so I need a short pixie cut, prefurabley with layers. I just want to look good, not like a weirdo. I’m afraid that if I get it cut that way, it will make my face look fat.
PLEASE RESPOND AS SOON AS POSSIBLE!!!!
I NEED YOUR HELP!!!
I want a pixie, so can you tell me if you think that it would look good, and if thats the response, can you tell me where I could find a specific cut? Remember, I’m young, I have a heart shaped face, am getting braces, and want to have a pixie.
Please help me look good!!!
Thanks!!!
Hi, Katherine!
If you take a look of pictures of actress Ashley Green as Alice Cullen in the Twilight films, you’ll see she’s sporting a longer version of the pixie haircut. If this is the style for you, your hair won’t be too short and the lengths will still be off of your neck to keep you cool during the summer months. For more style inspiration, check out the March issue of Sophisticate’s—on stands now! Inside, you’ll find a special 14-page Best Short Star Style Trends guide that has tons of looks we think you’ll like.
Hi!!!
I already have a short hair cut; it has lots of layers, and i curve it out to make it look like Alice Cullen’s from Twilight. My hair is very fine and brown, with no coloring, so i use moose. I just got my hair cut this way. I have a heart shaped face, and I’m wondering if I should get a pixie. I really want one, but I’m worried it will look bad with a heart shaped face. Do you think I should get it? If so, can you recommend a specific one? Thanks.
Hi, Cindy!
The haircut Ashley Greene sports as Alice Cullen in Twilight is a lengthy version of a pixie haircut. Long, soft layers best accentuate a heart-shaped face. Going shorter could take away from accentuating your cheekbones, but you should check out the special 14-page Best Short Style Star Trends feature in our current issue (with Lauren Conrad on the cover) for more inspiration!
Saw products page….again petite, short hair. I am confused. As I stated I had one stylist that texturized a good deal in top. I think she used a pomade or volumizer and also she used a texturizer for piecy….she is no longer in my area, and I have not found a way to explain to a stylist yet what I am looking for..even with pictures???
Hi, Pam!
Please see our answer to your questions below. Happy styling!
I love short hairstyles as I am just 5 foot tall, and around 120. I have a very tiny oval face. It looks like a child face. I can pass for younger than I am. I have fine hair, that is colored. I love short, cropped styles with a slight amount of bangs, as I do have a slightly long forehead. I have had textured haircuts in the past and they have done very well, with gel, texturizer. Lately I have noticed two things, my hair is getting dryer, and needing a moisturing shampoo and conditioner. I have not used one in the past, as it leaves my hair very soft, and with no body in just a day. When I have not used the moisturizing shampoo I have not had this problem, yet my hair is very dry now after shampoo…I want the textured sexy crop and be good to my hair..last time I went to stylist she had to texture twice, and it still doesn’t do right..if the moisturing shampoo or incorrect texturizing.?help. signed no dumb blond
Hi, Pam!
You can still use styling products (like texturizer or gel) in your hair after shampooing with a moisturizing product, but choosing which product to use depends on the length of your hair. If your hair is down to your chin, try spritzing a little texturizing spray in your hair prior to blow-drying upside down for more volume. If your hair is shorter, you may want to use a pomade, paste or puddy, which will create a slight hold but allow for lots of movement.
I have a bob and i love it, it’s very easy to style and doesnt take long.
Hi, Ema!
Thanks for sharing! Have you seen our February 2011 issue? There are tons of fabulous hair looks featured inside—we think they will inspire you.
Hi I would like to know if short hair is right for me… I have a round face also a double chin which makes it dificult for me to choose something short. Can you please help me??
Hi, Aurora!
There are a variety of styles you can wear, but the shortest you may want to go is just above the shoulders. It’s all about complementing your face shape with soft, face-framing layers. You may even want to consider a sexy side bang!
looking for a photo of Lisa Rimma about three years ago. I lost mine and now I can’t seem to get them to do my hair right. She has had different styles. This was a lager picture 5×7 3×4 maybe. Thanks Mary Shelton
Hi, Mary!
We think you’ll love the photo of Lisa Rinna’s classic style featured in our February 2011 issue! Look for the Sophisticate’s Hairstyle Guide with Christina Aguilera on the cover and flip to piece titled “Celebrity Glamour.”
I have chin length hair that is naturally wavy/curly and thick. I was wanting to get it cut shorter, like either a pixie or a tad longer. I’ve had short hair several times in my life, but I want to try a different type of hairstyle. Any suggestions? Also, my face shape is oval and I’m a petite person.
Hi, Ashley!
You’ve hit the jackpot with your oval face shape…you can wear any style you want! For some style inspiration, pick up a copy of the February 2011 issue of Sophisticate’s (on stands now!) and flip to the piece called “Short Cuts.”
How about more hair styles for older women??
Hi, Karen!
Thank you for the suggestion. We have published hairstyles that suit women of all ages in Sophisticate’s and, as you check out our pages, please note the diversity on our pages and the content that applies to all women of all ages!
I have had super long hair (down to my thighs)my entire life, recently after having twins and a very active 2yr old I want to go super short (just a bit below the ears). I have a round face and was wondering if this look would be good for me. Something similar to Gina in your October 2010 edition Page 33.
Hi, Victoria!
The asymmetrical bob is a great haircut. You’ll have the easy maintenance of a short snip in back and the benefits of longer hair in front! Another great aspect about this cut is the longer layers will frame your face and create a balance between your new short hair and your round face shape.
i want to cut my hair in a pixie cut but i have curly hair…would it work??
Hi, Becca!
Just because you have curly hair doesn’t mean you can’t wear a super cute pixie haircut. Think Halle Berry! If you have a lot of curls, it is important to go short enough in the cut to create a truly sassy, finished look. It can be a bold step, but if you are ready for it and get the cut short enough, you’ll have fantastic result.
Yes it would work. There are a lot of styling products includeing in Salon and home treatments. The flat iron is a great tool for curly hair. Give it a try, it will always grow!
While Halle Berry is a great example of a super cute pixie, she is African American and the hair is very different than that of caucasians. Her hair has also been chemically straightened. When making a change like this make sure you are ready for the work involved daily with flat irons and product. I would also discourage going to short at first if you don’t have any experience with using these tools. Good luck!
I went and had my hair cut yesterday from a picture in your magazine sophisticates hairstyleguide the one with Carrie Underwood on it. Its the preview 2011 the collections on page 56 the Dee Dee Hightower and I loved it when I left the salon. But the next day I could not do it like she did. The problem was I don’t think she had the back short enough throughout the back. I have been looking at the picture all night because I am going back today and see if I can get her to fix . Is there any way you can explain the back better to me? It looks like she used the razor to texturized it more. If there’s any advise to help me explain it to better I would be so gratful.
I’m looking for an easy-to-do style for short-medium naturally curly hair. I’m horrible at doing my own hair so I need a style I can do at home that’s easy. I go to the salon & get my hair styled once a month.
Hi, Melanie!
Check out the latest issue of Sophisticate’s Hairstyle Guide (with Carrie Underwood on the cover). Try a celeb-inspired style like that of Kylie Minogue or Vanessa Marcil, found in our Sexy Celebrity Styles section. Or, pick a look from the Sophisticate’s Hair Makeover Mini-Mag! There are several photos of short, curly styles in there for you to clip out and show your stylist.
Right now my hair is just below my chin. Ive been looking for a shorter hair style but nothing to short. the only problem is that i have really thick hair and its way to hot in the summer. What would be the best style for me?
Hi, Jodie!
Pick up a copy of the September issue of Sophisticate’s Hairstyle Guide (the one with Cameron Diaz on the cover!). Inside, you’ll find a great piece called “South Beach Couture” that showcases several fantastic chin-length bob haircuts! Some of the styles feature lots of layering, which will remove some of the bulk of your thick hair and keep you cool during the summer.
I think it was your magazine that had an amazing photo last month, in the previous issue. how can I get a copy?
Hi, Chloe!
Thanks for reading Sophisticate’s Hairstyle Guide! We don’t carry back issues, but we can suggest checking out your local library or salon. A lot of stylists keep a few copies of the magazine in their salon for client inspiration!
I would love short hair with long bangs like Katir Holmes, but I am low maitenance and have wavy hair. What should I do?
Hi, Merin!
As I tell my clients…roll with it, baby! These styles are so easy and require little fuss. All you need to do is use a fabulous styling cream, scrunch and go. This style is not about perfection. It’s about creating movement. Just let the hair fall around your fingers rather than your fingers trying to work too hard to style your hair. This is a great style for summer. Finish with a light hold spray and scrunch through.
I’m Asian and I made the mistake of having my hair bleached platinum blonde. I have a short pixie haircut and my hair grows super fast so the roots show within two weeks. I want to go back to black/grow my hair out. What is the best way to go about doing this?
Hi, Shannon!
Definitely work with a seasoned, color-correction expert. A color-correction procedure of this nature can cost $200 to $500 sometimes, depending on where you go, so always be careful of making such drastic changes. The more drastic the color, the more drastic the investment (of time and money) to bring it back to your natural color. Our rule of thumb in the color world is to stay within one or two levels of your own natural color for best looking results and optimal health of the hair. Good luck, and we’re glad you had fun experimenting with color!
Hey! I’ve been looking at both the long and short styles and I love both but… may hair is right in between those lengths. It’s about at the shoulders (maybe a little shorter) so none of these styles really apply. It’d be nice to see some more styles with that length. Just a suggestion.
