Winter Beauty

Winter Beauty

Today is National Cocoa Day! While you bob for melty marshmallows to celebrate, take a second to read about how you can keep your skin healthy and pretty during the winter months, courtesy of board-certified NYC Dermatologist Dr. Janet Prystowsky…

1.       When showering, favor warm water over hot, and try not to use a lot of soap. Soap and cleansers will dry your skin out.

2.       Use a heavier moisturizer and more oily products than you would otherwise use in order to keep your skin hydrated. Don’t lick your lips or use chapstick though. Try a thin coating of Vaseline or Aquaphor instead for chapped lips.

3.       Protect your face, ears, head, fingers, and toes with warm outer wear. Staying dry is equally as important! Otherwise you put yourself at risk for frostbite.

4.       You can still get a sunburn during the winter particularly if at high altitude with snow on the ground, so use sunscreen on skin that is exposed to sunshine when you’re outside.

5.       Use a humidifier and keep a reasonable distance away from air heaters that will dry out your skin. Use Vaseline or Aquaphor if your hands or feet feel dry;  after application, wipe off the excess with a facial tissue to give you an ultrathin coating that will feel smooth and soft.
